Equipment setup
I have a Mars 600 watt (rated) LED light above three buckets with the clones and seedlings I grow. A piece of 30% shade cloth helps the clones grow longer, flexible stems. I bought this tent to give the clones more room and can add a third bucket if needed. Each bucket usually only has four clones or seedlings but I also have a couple of 6x.

I built my own system for propagating clones. A small pump with a fogger nozzle keeps the clones sprayed with a fine mist of nutrient solution recycling 24 hours a day. A small air pump supplies fresh air through a porous stone to aerate the solution. I used NPT 1″ Cord Grip Cable Glands, Waterproof Adjustable 18-25mm Plastic Cable Connectors Nylon Joints with Lock Nut and Gaskets and 3/4″ black water pipe to make a vent and access for the air hose.
I got a couple of great ideas from cruising the internet. The first was using the food safe sanitizer Star San to clean the buckets weekly. The other was adding a tap to check the pH without opening the bucket or putting anything into the solution. It also is set to let me know if the solution level is too low.
Creating Clones
I shape my clones two different ways depending on how they will be used. Mother plants are used solely to create new clones while a few will be shaped for the vegetation stage. When I am ready to start the new clone I cut the stem from a mother plant using a sharp pair of scissors sterilized in alcohol and trim off all but the top 2-3 leaves. I cut the lower end of the stem about 3/4 inch below the last node while underwater. I place the stem in the tap water for 10 to 20 minutes to remove any oxygen trapped in the end which will cause the plant to wilt and possibly die.
It takes from 5 to 21 days for roots to form on the new clones depending on the strain. Golden Tiger v.3 is fast with 5 to 8 days while Lemon Kush can take up to 21 days. As the roots grow I will trim them daily to promote thicker stems. I mist the plant stems in tap water daily to kill an airborne virus or bacteria that will rot the stems. This problem began when I moved the plants into the basement. I need to check daily for any sign of the rot, brown/gray brown and soft tissue.
Getting ready for the vegetation stage
Timing clones to be ready for the vegetation tray is a bit tricky. Because it is such a slow grower Lemon Kush needs to be started 2-3 weeks before the other strains I grow. I try to have two sets of each strain I grow, one of these being 3 – 4 weeks older. This allows me to always have plants ready to move into the DWC buckets for the next cycle.

I now top my clones when they have four stems showing at the first nodes. If I only have 2 buckets in a tent I will start six stems to create a wider plant. Four stems are easy to manage and this allows plenty of room for light and air to get to the lower colas.

To prepare clones for the vegetation stage I place them a little closer to the light and trim the roots daily. A few days before moving to the vegetation buckets I trim the roots to fit in a net pot without bending. The roots will take off the fastest if I don’t trim them for two days before moving to a bucket.
